Dolphin sighting in the bay

07.23.08

One day while halibut fishing out in the bay, guests Matt and Todd and myself were treated with an absolutely unforgettable experience. We had a pod of Pacific White-Side Dolphin circle us for about 30 minutes. I’ve seen countless whales over the years, but this dolphin experience was completely new for me.

At times the dolphins would follow just behind our boat, jumping in the wake. Other times, jumping off the bow. Then we’d follow the pod trying to catch up, they’d circle back around curious, and jump again. We were completely ecstatic… the buzz lasted the entire day. And the memory remains as one of my “favorite” Alaska wildlife moments.

This experience was another reminder to me about the wide range of diversity we frequently experience on the Pacific side of the Alaska Peninsula.

FTC Disclosure: we were not given these dolphins for free.
